Home on the Road – How to Make Your Truck Cab More Comfortable

Being a truck driver often means spending many long hours and sometimes even days or weeks sitting behind the wheel. In other words, trucking is pretty much like living on the road with your vehicle becoming a veritable home away from home. As such, it can be helpful to take certain measures that make the cab of your truck more comfortable. Here are a few of the many ways truck driving professionals transform their cabs from all business to a warm, personalized space.

Seat – A great place to begin your trucking makeover is in the place where you’ll spend most of your time – in the driver’s seat. There are a number of seat covers on the market that are designed specifically to support the long hours and subsequent physical needs of a truck driver. For instance, you may consider something that offers lumbar support to minimize back strain.

Sleeping Quarters – Long haul truck driving typically requires that drivers spend time sleeping in their vehicles. As such, the cab of your truck may already be equipped with an area designed for this purpose. Maximize the comfort of your sleeping area by investing in comfortable pillows and bedding, including a mattress topper. If your cab has a window, you may also want to consider putting curtains up to help block out the light and facilitate more fitful sleep.

Storage – Keeping your truck organized can help make the driving experience more pleasant. There are lots of options available for trucking professionals, such as center console organizers, overhead storage bins or even hanging laundry bags. Not only do these things provide a practical way to store necessary day-to-day items, but they’re ideal for maximizing the use of small spaces.

Food – Any experienced trucker will tell you that the thrill of fast food quickly wears off. Not to mention the toll eating out all the time can take on your health. For this reason, it may be wise to consider investing in a mini-fridge and small microwave. This will allow you to stock up on food that is better for you and heat things up as needed so you won’t have to hit the drive-through every time you’re hungry.

Entertainment – Depending on how far you must travel, many drivers find that satellite radio is a worthwhile option for keeping up to date on the latest news, listening to more customized music and having plenty of other options for entertainment on the go, like comedy, sports and political commentary. You may also wish to bring along a tablet, laptop or small television to be used while you are relaxing after a long day on the road.

Exercise – Many truck drivers find incorporating exercise into their daily routine critical to helping them beat the bulge and other health issues that often stem from sitting behind the wheel for extended periods of time. Keeping small items in your cab, like hand weights or an exercise mat, can make it easy and convenient to stay in shape while you’re away from home.

Of course, these are just a few of the many ways you can make your truck cab a more comfortable place to be. Bringing pictures of loved ones and other personal items can also lend to your vehicle’s home-like feel and make those long trips much more bearable.
