Warehousing Jobs

Warehousing and storage jobs increased the most within the transportation industry from 2020 to 2021, rising by 17.3%. Warehouse employment also reached an all-time high in September 2020 with 1.25 million workers, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. These jobs include forklift operators, shipping and receiving clerks, machine operators, and more.

A recent report found that the global warehousing market is estimated to be valued at $285 billion in 2022 and grow to $326.3 billion by 2024. This growth is largely driven by eCommerce, pharmaceuticals, and online grocery shopping.

Flight Attendants

As more and more people begin to travel again and travel more frequently, flight attendants are needed for most airlines. On June 10, 2022, the Bureau of Transportation Statistics reported that U.S. cargo and passenger airlines added 4,752 new jobs in April of 2022. They’ve also stated that the employment of flight attendants is projected to grow 30% from 2020 to 2030. This is much faster than most occupations and job openings are expected to reach 17,600 each year, on average.

Airline & Commercial Pilots

According to the Federal Aviation Administration, the U.S. currently has 159,000 active airline pilots. But with a severe pilot shortage among domestic airlines, they would need to train 87 new airline pilots every day for the next 20 years to meet the growing demand. To help combat this shortage, airlines like Delta Air Lines have dropped their four-degree requirement to lower the barrier to entry.

This high need for pilots comes from the COVID-19 pandemic which halted pilot hiring as training and licensing slowed, as CNBC reports. To cut labor costs, many airlines handed out early retirement packages to thousands of pilots and other employees. This year alone, major U.S. airlines are trying to hire more than 12,000 pilots.

Truck Driver Jobs

In April of 2022, the Bureau of Labor Statistics reported that more than 5,000 trucking jobs were added in February which marked the 22nd consecutive month of increases.

With a rising demand for shipping goods and food delivery, the field is expected to grow substantially in 2022. According to the American Trucking Association, the industry is short approximately 80,000 drivers, and that number is expected to increase to 160,000 by 2030.

This shortage has also been driven by the COVID-19 pandemic along with outdated infrastructure which has made it difficult to move goods across the country quickly and efficiently. To help combat this, trucking employers across the U.S. are developing new training programs to help recruit, train, and retain drivers. President Biden also signed a $1 trillion infrastructure law in November of 2021 to establish a new apprenticeship program to help train younger drivers and prepare them for joining the industry.
